Peru: Blue Helmets depart for Central African Republic to fulfill mission

12:54 | Lima, Jan. 23.

The 205 Blue Helmets belonging to the V Contingent of Peru Engineering Company on Wednesday departed on a peace mission to the Central African Republic (CAR) as part of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission.

Since the early morning, the contingent —made up of military personnel from the three Armed Forces— gathered at Air Group No. 8, where relatives arrived to say goodbye to their loved ones, amidst emotional scenes.

Before their departure, V Contingent of Peru Engineering Company Commander Carlos Sanchez highlighted the participation of the 179 men and 26 women of the Armed Forces, who —in turn— become Ambassadors for Peace to the United Nations

The Peruvian peacekeeping troops are responsible for the construction and maintenance of airdromes, heliports, bridges, and roads in the
Central African country.

It must be noted this work has been conducted annually since 2016. In the mentioned year, Peru became the first Latin American country to join the efforts with an engineering company.

Finally, it collaborates fulfilling other tasks that the UN considers convenient. This represents a support to the vulnerable population in the Central African Republic.
