12:35 | Mala (Lima region), Jun. 23.
A total of 15 aftershocks from Tuesday's night powerful 6.0 magnitude quake —centered in Mala district, in Cañete Province of Lima— have been so far recorded by the
Geophysical Institute of Peru (IGP), its Executive President Hernando Tavera said on Wednesday.
The last aftershock reported by the IGP —of magnitude 4.8 on the Richter scale— occurred at 7:02 a.m. at a depth of 42 km.
According to the IGP, the epicenter of this telluric movement was located 16 km south west of Chilca, in Cañete. The quake was felt at intensity IV.
Tavera confirmed that the Peruvian Navy ruled out a tsunami off the coast of Peru.
He affirmed that only seismic events greater than magnitude 7 can generate anomalies at sea.
In statements to local channel TV Peru, the IGP executive president confirmed that Mala is the most affected urban area by this strong earthquake. In this city, damage has been reported in several homes (cracks in walls and collapse of roofs).
Tavera called on the population to take into account the type of construction of their homes and the quality of the soil where they were built so as to avoid possible damage.
"We live in a highly seismic country. So, we must work on prevention measures, guarantee the quality of the house construction, and identify evacuation routes to safe places," he explained.
