Over 2.8 million Peruvians to mark National Day overseas

A total of 2,885,787 Peruvian nationals residing abroad will commemorate the 196th anniversary of Peru's independence from Spanish rule on Friday, July 28.

Spread all over the world, Peruvians will celebrate National Day with joy and happiness; in fact, many will have the chance to sample popular culinary delights on the occasion.

Prepared by the Peruvian community, traditional dishes will be served at embassies and immigration associations outside the Inca country.


According to National Institute of Statistics and Informatics' (INEI) data, the aforementioned figures reveal the number of Peruvians who left the country between 1990 and 2015 and did not return: 51.4% were women and 48.6% men.

The INEI report shows that 31% of all Peruvian immigrants lived in the United States, 14.3% in Spain, 14.2% in Argentina and 11.1% in Chile during the 1990-2015 period.


Likewise, 9.9% resided in Italy, 3.9% in Japan, 3.3% in Venezuela, 1.8% in Canada, 1.7% in Brazil, 1.0% in France, 0.9% in Germany, 0.8% in Switzerland, 0.8% in Bolivia and 5.3% in other countries.

When it comes to continents, 32.8% migrated to North America, 30.8% to Europe and Asia. Plus, 31.1% remained in South America.

It must be noted 39.8% of Peruvians living abroad sent remittances back to their homeland in 2016.
