The Organization of American States (OAS) and the Government of Peru on Thursday signed the agreement on preparations for the Eighth Summit of the Americas set to take place in Lima in April 2018.

Said meeting is expected to bring together all Heads of State and Government of the Hemisphere in the Peruvian nation's capital city.

OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro reiterated the commitment to the principles of cooperation promoted by the hemispheric event.

Likewise, he highlighted the importance of the theme chosen by Peru, as well as the relevance of continuing to strengthen the participation of civil society and other social actors within the framework of the Summit.

"The theme of 'Democratic Governance against Corruption', which was chosen by the Government of Peru for the next Summit, is part of the essential mandates and tasks of the OAS," Almagro stated.

"We will be working together during the Summit to contribute to agreeing on tangible actions and results that help our region to face the challenges of governance and corruption," he added.

For her part, Representative of Peru to the Organization of American States Ana Rosa Valdivieso appreciated the support the OAS provides for this event and the relevance of the theme chosen by her country.

"We have begun the process of preparations for the Summit, we believe that the theme that has been chosen is a current topic of great importance for the region," the Peruvian diplomat said.

"And we will put all our efforts in making the Summit successful; this means it achieves concrete results and policies that make sense for the entire region," she concluded.

The event took place at the headquarters of the hemispheric institution in Washington D.C.
