Lima 2019: IPC President praises Parapan Am Games importance

00:00 | Lima, Aug. 21

International Paralympic Committee President Andrew Parsons has affirmed the Lima 2019 Parapan American Games should be taken as a strong message of unity between the athletes and society.

The Brazilian said the expectations around this sporting event are very high, taking into account what happened with the Lima 2019 Pan American Games, which were described as "the best in history" by Neven Ilic, head of Panam Sports.

"They (the Parapan American Games) are affirmative events to show that people with disabilities can do anything, just give them the opportunity. Here we do it through sport, these Games are a catalyst, a very strong message of equality among all," Parsons expressed.

He highlighted the number of countries that are participating in these Games (33) and said the intention of the presiding body is to increase sports and athletes with each new edition.

"These are important games for the Pan American continent, because we do not have as many competitions as in Europe, so it is a very important qualification opportunity for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games," Parsons stated.

"For the president of Panam Sports, the Pan American Games were the best games ever; I hope that the president of the Americas Paralympic Committee can say the same at the end of the Parapan American Games," he concluded.

The Parapan American Games will be inaugurated on August 23, but one day before, on August 22, competition will begin with table tennis.
