Peruvian President Ollanta Humala on Saturday paid a surprise visit to Trujillo, in northern La Libertad region, to review progress on the construction of sport infrastructure for this month's Bolivarian Games.
The 2013 Bolivarian Games will take place in Trujillo from November 16 to 30 with the participation of 3,500 athletes from 11 countries.
During his visit, the president toured the city's Chan Chan stadium, Huaca del Sol sports center and the Bolivarian Villa for a briefing on the progress of infrastructure projects there.
"Works on the stadium and sports center are well underway and we are coordinating with [regional president] Cesar Acuña to complete them soon. Undoubtedly, the central government will continue to work with local authorities as a single team."
Noting that Trujillo is one of Peru's fastest growing cities after Lima, Humala said that Peruvian Sports Institute (IPD) President Francisco Boza will stay in this city to address the issue of accommodation for athletes, support staff and officials.
The 2013 event will be the first Bolivarian Games to have athletes from 11 countries, instead of the usual six members of the Bolivarian Sports Organization, or ODEBO. The ODEBO member countries are Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Panama and Venezuela; while the other participating nations are Chile, El Salvador, Guatemala, Paraguay and Dominican Republic.
