Facebook, social network most used by Peruvians to consume news

The Digital News Report 2021 by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, which covers 46 countries around the world, reveals that Facebook is the social network most used (69%) by Peruvians to be informed about the national juncture.

It is followed by WhatsApp (42%) and YouTube (35%). 18% receive news from Instagram, whereas a similar number does from Facebook Messenger. For their part, 13% consume news on Twitter and other 7% on Tik Tok.

Concerning the use of social networks for all types of content, the report states that Facebook and WhatsApp are the most used platforms with 84% and 80%, respectively. They are followed by YouTube (78%), Facebook Messenger (50%), Instagram (48%), Tik Tok (26%), and Twitter (23%).


Dissemination of news on social networks

It must be noted that 52% of users share news on social networks, instant messaging, or email.

Within this framework, 37% trust the news content disseminated on social platforms, the study reveals.

In addition, the Official Gazette El Peruano registers the highest rating in terms of trustworthiness at the domestic level, according to the Digital News Report 2021.
