South America's soccer governing body Conmebol has sent a letter of condolences to the family of young Peruvian player Yair Clavijo, who died during a reserves match between Sporting Cristal and Real Garcilaso on Sunday.
His death, caused by cardiac arrest, occurred in the Municipal Stadium of Urcos in Cusco, which sits at 3,400 meters above sea level.
"The President of Conmebol (also known as the CSF) sent a letter of condolences to the president of the Peruvian Association, Manuel Burga, to be transmitted to the player's family," said spokesman Nestor Benitez to AFP.
Benitez said CSF President Eugenio Figueredo was "shocked by this unfortunate event" and that he sent "his solidarity to the Clavijo family and Peruvian football."
He added that "it's unfortunate what happened to a young man who was a promising football player."
Clavijo, 18, fell to the ground with only five minutes remaining in the game.
Despite medical assistance the Sporting Cristal defender did not recover, Conmebol's official website reported.
