Chinchero International Airport to be the second most important in Peru

18:12 | Cusco (Cusco region), Feb. 17.

The Chinchero International Airport in Cusco (AICC) will become the second major airport in Peru, after Jorge Chavez International Airport, when it begins to operate, Transport and Communications Ministry (MTC) said on Monday.

"Once the Chinchero International Airport is operational, it will become the second most important airport in the country," the MTC head Carlos Lozada stated.

The AICC project has been awaited for more than 40 years in Cusco region and is economically significant.

"It will promote tourism in the region and across the country," he added.

Lozada stressed the need for it to be ready soon, considering the current saturation at Velasco Astete Airport.

"This project will not only stimulate the growth of tourism, but exports. In fact, it will help reduce cost overruns in the export chain," Lozada said at the launch of AICC construction.

In addition, he hopes that the growth in tourism and exports will generate an impact in the development of Cusco region.

The government official emphasized the importance of the agreement between Peru and South Korea in the design and management of processes leading to the construction of AICC.
