Peru and Italy reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral political dialogue and expanding areas of cooperation during the 5th Political Consultations Mechanism, chaired in Rome by Italian Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Maria Tripodi, and Peruvian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Felix Denegri.

Following the celebration of the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries in 2024, the meeting reaffirmed the shared decision to increase high-level visits and open new cooperation spaces.

During this session, Italy reiterated its interest in helping close Peru's infrastructure gap by taking part in investment projects within the South American country's project portfolio.

The growing dynamism of Italian and Peruvian entrepreneurs in sectors such as railways, renewable energy, environment, and agriculture, among others, was also highlighted, with the aim of boosting Italian investment flows into Peru.

Areas of cooperation

The mechanism emphasized the importance of the 12th Italy–Latin America and Caribbean Conference and opportunities for collaboration in science, technology, culture, and development cooperation.

Discussions also addressed the fight against transnational crime and drug trafficking through joint initiatives between judicial authorities and police forces.

Additionally, Italy reiterated its support for Peru’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

"Peru welcomes the shared political will with Italy to give this valuable dialogue space an annual frequency. We have reaffirmed our commitment to identifying new initiatives that will diversify the bilateral agenda," Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Denegri stated.

"In this regard, Peru proposed the creation of a bilateral mechanism on consular and migration issues, considering the significant presence of migrant communities. Economic complementarity, investment opportunities, and active cultural exchanges provide opportunities to further strengthen relations with Italy," he added.

In turn, Undersecretary Maria Tripodi said "Peru is an important partner in the Latin American region. I expressed to Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Denegri my satisfaction with today’s fruitful consultations and with our increasingly robust bilateral relationship, which was relaunched thanks to my mission to Lima in 2024 and followed by other political visits from the Italian Government over the past year."

"There is a common will to continue working in the best interests of both countries," she noted.

The meeting also allowed for an exchange of views on regional crises such as Venezuela and international issues ranging from the Middle East to Ukraine.
