FA Min emphasizes importance of Peru's participation in Chancay Megaport

10:19 | Lima, Nov. 19.

Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer emphasized that the implementation of the Chancay Megaport is the outcome of collaboration between Peruvian and Chinese companies, not a response to the government of the People's Republic of China.

In an interview with Canal N on Monday night, the government official stated that the nature and ownership of the port are being misunderstood, with it being attributed to the Chinese government.

The ambassador clarified that it is a joint venture between a Peruvian investor, Inversiones Portuarias Chancay, and a company from the People's Republic of China, Cosco Shipping.

The diplomat clarified that Cosco Shipping holds 60% of shares, while its Peruvian counterpart retains 40%.

Schialer made these clarifications when asked about remarks by an adviser to U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to Bloomberg News regarding the possibility of the United States imposing higher tariffs on goods passing through the Chancay Port, considering China's participation in this terminal.

The Peruvian minister also noted that he had learned of this "with considerable concern."
