From May 2 to August 29, 2022, the SHE IS ASTRONAUTA program will be held, which comes to Peru for the first time with the help of the
SHE IS Foundation to strengthen STEM skills for girls in difficult situations of vulnerability between 9 and 15 years.
This first immersion program in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, according to its acronym in English) is co-created by the SHE IS Foundation and the NASA Space Center.
Thus, they will live a virtual experience for four months, including classes and conferences, which will allow them to prepare and strengthen their skills. The immersion program will come to an end with in one-week immersion experience in the Space Center, including 9 hours of class a day.
SHE IS ASTRONAUTA has the support of the Embassy of the United States in Peru, which has become a great ally in the efforts to empower and open opportunities for more girls and women to access these STEM skills.
In addition, it has the collaboration of UN WOMEN Latin America. SHE IS AN ASTRONAUT aims to increase girls' interest in STEM disciplines.
With the participation of 15 Peruvian girls in extreme vulnerability from all over the country, breaking paradigms that will allow their realities to be transformed, expanding their knowledge with the guidance of great professionals and leading women who have not only reached NASA but have also fulfilled their goals.
The call was open from February 10 to March 15 of the current year and 674 girls from different regions of the country applied.
After a rigorous selection process, carried out by the SHE IS Foundation and its educational committee, the 15 girl crewmembers of the program, who come from Arequipa, Lima and Cusco, were selected.
This historical program, which is carried out for the first time in Peru, seeks to recruit great allies who can join this commitment so as to impact the lives of girls and young people, turning them into agents of change.
Immersing them in the opportunities that the United States can offer for their entire education process is a commitment of the foundation and of this great alliance with the Embassy of the United States of America in Peru.

The program is expected to be replicated in the following years, so that it can thus contribute to reducing the gender gap in STEM careers and thus empower future female scientists and engineers in Peru.
