09:51 | Marseille (France), Aug. 7.

It took 32 years for Peru to win an Olympic medal once again. Sailor Stefano Peschiera on Wednesday secured the third place in Men's Dinghy Medal Race, thus claiming a bronze award at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

The ILCA 7 class (formerly known as Laser Standard) had to wait until Wednesday to compete in the Medal Race after its postponement last Tuesday due to lack of wind.

The three sailors finished in those same positions after the qualifying races held until last Monday.

On Wednesday, the wind in Marseille did not cooperate much, with even the first attempt at the Medal Race being interrupted due to its low intensity.

In the second attempt, the race was completed.

Australian Matt Wearn —gold medalist at Tokyo 2020 and current world champion— once again held the first place. Cypriot Pavlos Kontides —silver medalist at the Tokyo Games— came in second, while the Peruvian successfully undertook efforts to stay ahead of British sailor Michael Beckett.

29-year-old Peschiera, who held the 36th position globally upon arriving in Marseille, was ranked 25th at Tokyo 2020 and 31st at Rio 2016.

Thanks to this achievement, Peru has won its first medal at the Paris 2024 Games. It is also its fifth in Olympic Games history.
