Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Roberto Sanchez has reported that 242,000 foreign tourists arrived in Peru in the first quarter of 2022, an increase of 689.3% compared to the same period of the previous year.
According to Sanchez, the main sources of tourists to Peru were the United States (accounting for 32.6% of the total), Chile (10.3%), Colombia (7.6%), Spain (6.1%), Ecuador (5.8%), Argentina (4.6%), Brazil (3.6%), Mexico (3.3%), France (2.9%), Germany (2.7%), Canada (2.4%), and Italy (2.3%).
Visitors from these countries accounted for 84.2% of the total international tourist arrivals to the country.
On the other hand, 5.3 million domestic tourism trips were made in the first quarter (up 96.1% from the same period in 2021).
Moreover, the average expenditure of domestic tourists in Peru during these visits equaled to S/594 (about US$154), and visitors have spent on average six nights per visit.
It should be pointed out that 6.8 million passengers have passed through Peruvian airports in the first quarter of this year, a 126% increase over the same period in 2021.
Domestic flights accounted for 77.5% of all flights (up 106.6% compared to 2021), while international flights accounted for 22.5% (up 234.7% compared to 2021).
The minister remarked that these figures are a clear sign that the actions promoted by the Executive Branch, in coordination with the private sector, as well as with regional and local governments, yield positive results, making it possible to reactivate and boost domestic tourism and to revive inbound tourism, too.
