147 political organizations take part in internal elections in Peru

11:59 | Lima, May. 15.

The National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE) is holding internal elections of 15 political parties, 131 regional movements and one electoral alliance, so that they can elect their candidates for regional and municipal elections on October 2, 2022.

Internal elections are taking place across the country today. The process began at 7:00 a.m. and will end at 5:00 p.m.

Said party elections —the first in electoral history to elect subnational candidates with compulsory participation in the electoral system— will mark the return of 1,659,070 affiliates to the polls at the national level.

For this reason, the electoral body has planned the establishment of 5,195 polling stations, which will be distributed in 1,052 polling places, mostly at educational institutions, and will be guarded by members of the Armed Forces and the National Police.

Internal elections are taking place in 870 districts across the country. To do so, the ONPE has established 19 Regional Coordination Offices (ORC) and 9 focal points.

Law No. 31357 has set two modalities for the election of candidates: direct and indirect.

In the first case, affiliates shall go to the polls to directly elect their candidates by universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret vote.

Said modality will be used by 5 political parties, 53 regional movements, and an electoral alliance.

Regarding the second modality, affiliates elect their representatives —also by universal, free, voluntary, equal, direct, and secret vote— who at a second election on May 22 will finally choose their candidates for October elections.

This method will be used by 10 political parties and 78 regional movements, that is, the majority of political organizations.
