Monsignor Carlos Castillo on Monday stated that his appointment as the new Cardinal of Peru will not change the work he currently does with Peruvians.

The priest told RPP Noticias that the decision adopted by Pope Francis "does not mean that we give up on concrete relationships with the people and working at their service."

He pointed out that this link is directly related to the vision that the Supreme Pontiff has regarding the structure of the Catholic Church —an institution in which the "inverted pyramid" scheme puts people first.

Likewise, Cardinal Castillo said that most of the cardinals appointed over the weekend had been chosen "for pastoral reasons."

Synodal model

"The Pope is a pastor who is very focused on guiding the Church's life and seeing who are the right people to respond to the various problems," Castillo expressed.

From that perspective, the Catholic supreme pontiff has developed a synodal model that "walks, seeing faces and problems, as well as reforming the church along the way."

"It is a living church that responds," Castillo expressed.

Therefore, he emphasized his conviction that this new status assigned to him will not alter his relationship with parishioners.

Thus, Castillo considered that the qualification of "Eminence" within the Church should not be understood as something grandiose, but rather as "of closeness, affection, and service."

"In that sense, there is nothing to change; we continue forward as we always are, human," he pointed out.
