Peru: International tourist arrivals up 36.5% as of September

Between January and September 2024, Peru received 2,449,582 international tourists, a 36.5% growth compared to the same period last year, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported.

With this figure, Peru has managed to recover 73.8% of the inbound tourism level registered before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2019, the government agency noted.

According to information from the National Superintendence of Migrations, the main countries issuing international tourists to Peru were: Chile, with 540,409 tourists (22.1% of the total); the United States, with 454,510 (18.6%); Ecuador, with 220,990 (9.0%); Brazil, with 141,630 (5.8%); Bolivia, with 139,730 (5.7%); and Colombia, with 123,032 (5%).

At the regional bloc level, the arrival of visitors residing in South America accounted for 52% of the total (1,272,715 international tourists).

Furthermore, North America accounted for 23.9% (586,566 tourists); Europe for 16.6% (407,672); Asia for 3.8% (93,055); and others for 3.7% (89,574).

Entry into Peru

According to information provided by the Migrations Office, during the first nine months of the year, 65.6% of international tourists (1,606,811) entered Peru through the Immigration Control Post at Jorge Chavez International Airport, which reached 81.5% of pre-pandemic levels (January-September 2019).

Border control posts

On the other hand, the Santa Rosa de Tacna Border Control Post registered the entry of 390,621 tourists, accounting for 15.9%.

In turn, the Binational Border Service Center (CEBAF) in Tumbes received 177,019 travelers (7.2%).

The Desaguadero/CEBAF Puno Border Control Post welcomed 130,485 visitors (5.3%).

Other control posts registered 144,646 tourists (6%).

Tourist places

It is important to note that the Mincetur Monthly Tourism Report shows that, from January to August 2024, the most visited tourist destination in Peru was the Lima-based Magic Water Circuit, with 2,129,423 visitors.

This represents a year-on-year increase of 30.3%. Of the total number of visitors, 95.9% were domestic and 4.1% foreign.


On the other hand, the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu (Cusco region) welcomed 981,000 visitors during the first eight months of 2024, representing a 79% growth compared to the same period last year.

Of that total, 76% were foreigners and 24% Peruvians.
