Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea on Thursday highlighted the close relationship that Peru and Switzerland maintain.

The Peruvian Cabinet member, along with Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) Head Minister Ignazio Cassis, inaugurated the documentary exhibition to commemorate the 140 years of diplomatic relations between both nations.

"In diplomatic relations, Switzerland has been a very loyal friend, and Peru has always known how to reciprocate in the same manner," Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea expressed.

He said that, during this long diplomatic relationship, Peru learned from many Swiss examples regarding how to better manage freedom, democracy, and representativeness, categorizing fundamental rights.

The Peruvian government official particularly underscored the way Switzerland legislates, from the bottom up, all the way to Parliament.

In this regard, Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea mentioned the numerous referendums to consult about the expansion and conservation of green areas, plus the reconversion of industries.

The high-ranking official also specified that Switzerland knew how to make its neutrality a global brand.

"Switzerland has chosen not to adopt passive neutrality, but active, positive neutrality for peace, in accordance with the San Francisco Charter principles," he pointed out.
