The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte stressed that her government promotes responsible and sustainable mining that contributes to communities' development.

"Our government promotes responsible and sustainable mining that contributes to the development of surrounding communities, projects, and the country. Of course, we support projects that consolidate Peru as a leader in the production of minerals, such as copper, at an international level," she said during the closing ceremony of ExpoCobre 2024 in Lima on Thursday.

The Head of State underscored that Peru's economy is experiencing a sustained recovery, with the lowest inflation in the region. Similarly, it provides legal stability and clear guidelines for environmentally responsible investments.

The top official noted that international conflicts and the COVID-19 pandemic have accelerated the change in the global energy matrix, which has caused an unusual increase in demand for minerals, namely copper.

In this context, Mrs. Boluarte emphasized that the world views Peru with great interest and expectation, especially because of its mineral and energy resources.

"A recent report from one of the world's largest mining companies highlights how copper is reshaping our future and how demand for copper might double by 2050," she noted.

Leader in world copper production

The president mentioned that this is a favorable scenario for Peru to consolidate itself as a leader in global production of this mineral, an objective to which the expansion of the smelter and refinery in the southern city of Ilo, the growth of Cuajone project, and the implementation of projects such as Chancas, Michiquillay, and Tia Maria contribute.

"We want a mining industry that will be the driving force behind the transformation of our regions, that will build a better future for Peru alongside us, a future without inequality gaps, but with progress and social justice in every part of the country," she underlined.

The top official highlighted that last August alone, national copper production reached 246,568 fine metric tons, the highest monthly figure in 2024, which represents a 10.9% growth compared to July of this year and a 10.7% increase in comparison to August 2023.

She also mentioned that red metal exports amounted to US$1.95 billion last July, which represented a 1.4% rise compared to the same period in 2023.

The ExpoCobre 2024 World Mining Fair brought together the main industry players and leading experts in Lima from October 28 to 31.
