APEC Peru 2024: Five official visits and two state visits will take place in Lima

09:30 | Lima, Oct. 30.

As part of the APEC Peru 2024 Economic Leaders' Week, the presidents and heads of government of South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia will pay official visits to Peru, while the leaders of Brunei Darussalam and China will make state visits, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer announced.

One of the state visits will be led by the President of the People's Republic of China, Xi Jinping, who, along with his Peruvian counterpart Dina Boluarte, will formally launch the activities of Chancay Megaport —the largest maritime hub that Peru will feature.

The other state visit will be made by the Sultan of Brunei Darussalam, Hassanal Bolkiah, Ambassador Schialer told Andina News Agency on Tuesday.

The diplomat said that state visits are the highest-level meetings held by presidents to review the state of their bilateral relations in all areas.

"Some of the leaders are coming earlier because they want to make an official visit first; that is, we are going to have five official visits from South Korea, Japan, Vietnam, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia, as well as two state visits," he detailed.

China, the largest delegation

The minister explained that the delegations from the largest economies in the Asia-Pacific region are usually the most numerous to arrive in Lima for APEC Peru 2024.

These include the delegation from the People's Republic of China that will participate in the APEC meetings -an economy that will conduct a state visit and also attend the Chancay Megaport inauguration.

"It is a very, very, very large delegation; look, I have used the word very large three times," he noted.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
