The
President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, visited the headquarters of the Apostolic Nunciature of the Holy See in Lima's Jesus Maria district on Monday to offer her condolences over the passing of Pope Francis.
The Head of State was accompanied by the Prime Minister, Gustavo Adrianzen, and Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on this occasion
After staying at the site for half an hour, the top official, the Cabinet chief, and the minister were escorted to the exit by the Apostolic Nuncio, Paolo Rocco Gualtieri, and then left the premises in their official vehicles.
In remarks to the press, Gualtieri indicated that President Dina Boluarte signed the book of condolences for the passing of the Supreme Pontiff, which occurred this Monday at his residence in Casa Santa Martha.
"The Government and the Peruvian people feel a great void and great sadness," reads the message left by the top official on the first page of the book of condolences, where she expresses her sorrow on behalf of Peru.
In remarks to RPP Noticias, Gualtieri stated that he spoke with the president about her memories of the Supreme Pontiff's visit to Peru in 2018. She also mentioned her 2023 trip to the Vatican, during which she spoke with the Pope about the country and about caring for the poor.
The Apostolic Nuncio highlighted that Pope Francis was always attentive to Peru and used to ask about the South American country's situation.
Likewise, the priest emphasized that the leader of Catholics "wanted a Church in favor of the poor."
Additionally, he indicated that the book of condolences will remain open until the funeral of the Bishop of Rome.
He also invited the faithful who wish to sign it to go to the Apostolic Nunciature to express their affection for Pope Francis.
