The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Embassy of the United States of America (USA) in Peru announced today the start of a commemorative year and countdown to the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between the two countries, whose official anniversary will be celebrated on May 2, 2026.

Through a joint statement, they emphasize that on May 2, 1826, Peru and the United States of America began a bilateral relationship based on respect, cooperation, and friendship, as documented in the letter signed by U.S. President John Quincy Adams.

This first official record marked the beginning of a relationship that, almost two centuries later, continues to strengthen strategically.

“Over these 200 years, we have forged broad and comprehensive cooperation in areas such as defense, security, space exploration, strengthening trade and reciprocal investment, as well as in science and technology, public health, two-way tourism, and numerous academic and cultural exchanges,” says the statement.

Furthermore, they emphasized that this relationship shines in emblematic spaces such as Washington Square and Kennedy Park in Lima; as well as Yma Sumac Street in Los Angeles and Peru Boulevard in New Jersey.

Therefore, during this year's celebrations, both in Peru and the United States of America, “everything that unites us as friendly countries” will be highlighted.

“Our activities will highlight the great moments that mark our shared history, as well as the contributions of exemplary Peruvians in American society, and the pioneers who came from the United States of America to Peru,” the joint statement emphasizes.
