Peru's Reniec: Pope Leo XIV updates data, to receive DNIe 3.0

13:32 | Lima, May. 30.

Pope Leo XIV, recently elected as Supreme Pontiff of the Catholic Church, updated his personal information and will be issued the new electronic ID card (DNIe 3.0) the National Registry of Identification and Civil Status (Reniec) reported on Friday.

Officials from said institution traveled to the Holy See to carry out the data update process for the pontiff, whose birth name is Robert Prevost and whose last registered address was in Chiclayo, northern Peru.

With this procedure, Reniec concluded its "Identification Without Borders" campaign in Rome, where more than 500 Peruvian citizens residing in Italy were served.

Born in the United States, Leo XIV has maintained a close connection with Peru since 1985, when he was sent as an Augustinian missionary to Chulucanas, Piura region.

Since then, he has carried out extensive pastoral work in the South American country, especially in the Peruvian north.

In 2015, he acquired Peruvian nationality and obtained his first National Identity Document (DNI). A year later, he applied for his first electronic DNI, which, due to his age —69 years— is not subject to periodic renewal.

Prevost was Bishop of Chiclayo from 2015 to 2023, and then Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops. In 2024, he was made a cardinal by Pope Francis.
