Peru: INPE executes Betssy Chavez's release order

07:14 | Lima, Sep. 5.

The National Penitentiary Institute (INPE) reported that, in compliance with a judicial order, it has implemented the release of former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez.

The former high-ranking official had been held at the Women's Annex Prison in Lima's Chorrillos district.

Via social media on Thursday, the INPE also specified that all release cases comply with the protocols established in its internal regulations, in accordance with Resolution No. 305-2008-INPE/P.

Meanwhile, Congressman Roberto Sanchez announced via his X account that Chavez is now officially free.

He also shared photos showing the former legislator signing her release documents at the healthcare center where she remains hospitalized.

A few days ago, the former Cabinet chief received medical attention at Maria Auxiliadora Hospital in Lima, as a precautionary measure, after having declared a dry hunger strike.

Last Wednesday, the Constitutional Court ordered the immediate release of Chavez, noting that the initial 18-month preventive detention against her had already expired.

Yet she remained in custody for eight additional days before said restrictive measure was reissued.

The ruling orders the Supreme Court of Preliminary Investigation to issue the corresponding release resolution.

It also specifies that the former Prime Minister may continue in the proceedings against her over the alleged crime of rebellion under restricted appearance.
