Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, who attended Pope Francis' funeral on behalf of Peru on Saturday, highlighted the massive farewell to the Supreme Pontiff.

In an interview with Radio Nacional, Schialer noted that many people attended the funeral ceremonies, not only from the world of politics and royal houses, but also delegations from other religious rites.

In this regard, the diplomat mentioned that the Mass held at St. Peter’s Basilica included an Orthodox rite, featuring hymns and prayers in Greek language.

"It was truly something absolutely emotional and moving," Schialer stated.

The ambassador noted that the entire congregation filled St. Peter’s Square and Bernini’s colonnade, cheering for the late Pontiff.

Minister Schialer mentioned that Peru's delegation was received by Cardinal and Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin, who sent warm greetings to the South American country, its citizens, and to the President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte.

He also said that Cardinal Parolin was informed of the President's wish to attend Pope Francis' funeral and understood that she was unable to do so due to internal reasons.

"He extended a special blessing to the Peruvian people and to President Dina Boluarte," Schialer concluded.
