Emergencies in Peru: Heavy rains have left 94 dead so far

A total of 94 people have died due to emergencies caused by heavy rains in Peru between December 2024 and March 31, 2025, according to statistics from the National Emergency Operations Center of the National Civil Defense Institute (COEN-Indeci).

Regarding the causes of these deaths, 20 were directly attributed to heavy rains, while 15 occurred during landslides. Fourteen (14) deaths were caused by lightning storms, and the same number resulted from accidents involving water transport.

Additionally, 12 deaths were due to landslides, seven (7) were caused by collapses, and six (6) resulted from flooding due to river overflows. Three deaths were linked to building collapses caused by rain, while another three occurred due to rockslides.

Between December 2022 and March 2025, 17 people have also been reported missing due to emergencies triggered by intense rainfall.

Among these cases, six (6) disappearances occurred in water transport accidents in Ucayali (4), Junin, and Puno regions. Heavy rains caused one person to go missing in Piura, one in Ica, one in La Libertad, and another in Cusco, totaling four disappearances.


One individual went missing due to a building collapse in Huaral, Lima region; and three disappeared in landslides in Aymaraes, Apurimac region. Additionally, three people went missing in landslides in Chanchamayo, Junin region.

More than 112,000 people affected

According to COEN-Indeci statistics, a total of 112,310 people have been affected by these emergencies. Additionally, 278,585 people have been impacted, and 37,938 have lost their livelihoods due to the rains.

In March alone, the number of impacted people reached 49,729, a slight decrease compared to February, which recorded 59,903 people.

Last month, 83,470 people were affected by the emergencies, and 8,491 lost their livelihoods.

The report also notes that 6,487 homes have been destroyed, and 43,044 are uninhabitable. In total, 132,931 properties of this type have been affected.

Between December and March, there have been 7,056 recorded emergencies.
