The Government and people of Peru express their deepest and most heartfelt condolences to the Catholic world on the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, the Church's universal shepherd and a living testimony of justice and love for one's neighbor.
"We join the People of God around the world in prayer during this time of sorrow, and we offer our prayers for his eternal rest. As a nation of faith, Peru pays tribute to one who, as a spiritual leader, knew how to illuminate the paths of the Church with wisdom, mercy, and hope," the
Presidency of the Republic stated on social media.
"May his legacy of service to the poorest, of dialogue among cultures and religions, of tireless defense of human dignity, and of the pursuit of peace in the world inspire present and future generations to live out the word of Jesus on Earth. May the light of the risen Christ strengthen the Church and all the faithful in this moment of universal mourning," it added.
Jorge Mario Bergoglio, Pope Francis, passed away on Monday at the age of 88 and after suffering from a painful illness.
Cardinal Kevin Farrell was in charge of announcing the passing of the Supreme Pontiff —the first pope of Latin American origin— at 7:35 a.m., Vatican time.
"We commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite merciful love of God," Farrell said.
"With deep sorrow, I must announce that Pope Francis died at 7:35 this morning. The Bishop of Rome has returned to the Father’s house. His entire life was dedicated to the service of the Lord and His Church, and he taught us the value of the Gospel with faithfulness, courage, and universal love —especially for the poorest and most marginalized," he stated.
