Peru's JNE: There could be 11,309 candidates in 2026 General Elections

08:33 | Lima, Apr. 16.

National Elections Board (JNE) Chairman Roberto Burneo stated that there could be 11,309 candidacies in the 2026 General Elections, given that 43 political organizations are registered.

"In total, there are 11,309 possible candidates, considering 43 political organizations. There may be fewer (candidates) if alliances are formed," the JNE head said before Congress' Constitution Commission members.

Burneo attended the working group to address the electoral milestones of the elections.

He noted that one of the most important is December 23 of this year, the deadline for political organizations to submit their applications for the registration of slates and candidate lists.

Candidates per party

Regarding this milestone, the JNE head specified that each political organization or alliance must submit around 263 forms in total.

Burneo indicated that although there are 208 positions to be elected, additional candidates are being considered, in accordance with parity rule. Thus, the number of candidacies may not match the total number of positions.

"In some areas, for example, there are seven seats to be elected. (So,) it is rounded up to eight to guarantee parity, which can be man-woman, or woman-man, according to each political organization's choice," he explained.

Election of alternates

The chief of the electoral body highlighted the importance of political organizations also electing their alternate candidates during their primary elections.

As is known, the established date for the primaries is November 30.

Burneo indicated that these alternates could replace any possible candidate before December 23, if for any reason they end up being excluded or withdraw their candidacy.

"That means that by November 30, they (the political organizations) must have a list of alternates, or delegates must also elect the alternates who could be selected from the list and replace candidates until December 23," he indicated.

The general elections are scheduled for April 12, 2026. On that day, the President of the Republic, Vice Presidents, Senators, and Deputies of Congress, as well as Peruvian representatives to the Andean Parliament, will be elected.

If none of the candidates for the Presidency and Vice Presidencies of the Republic obtains more than half of the valid votes, a second election (runoff) will be held between the two candidates with the highest number of votes on June 7, 2026.
