Peru's FA Min: Placement of Colombian flag reported for investigation and clarification

09:09 | Lima, Sep. 8.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer reported that the placement of a Colombian flag in the Tres Fronteras community, Putumayo province (Loreto region), has been reported in order for the incident to be investigated.

The government official indicated that personnel from the Peruvian Army's Jungle Battalion No. 83 proceeded to remove the foreign flag that had been hoisted in said locality, located at the tri-border area with Ecuador and Colombia.

"A complaint has also been filed to initiate investigations and clarify exactly what had occurred," Schialer told Canal N on Sunday.

The Cabinet member stated that the incident has already been fully resolved.

Likewise, the diplomat mentioned that this is an area under a state of emergency. Thus, the Armed Forces are in charge of control in the zone, along with the police.

"They are investigating this, and we are awaiting the conclusions in order to then take foreign policy actions, if applicable," he added.

When asked about the Permanent Joint Commission for the Inspection of the Peruvian–Colombian Border (Comperif) meeting, he stated that the main issue to be addressed is the Amazon River navigability, which is of particular concern to the neighboring country.

The upcoming event will be held in Lima on September 11 and 12.

Minister Schialer specified that this is not a widespread problem of Colombia's access to the Amazon River, but rather one specific to the locality of Leticia.

"It is a very important city, a very large city. It is important that it maintains its access to the Amazon, and that is what we are going to discuss in a technical manner, in a very judicious, very rigorous manner as well, and in a spirit of cordiality, which is what governs relations between bordering and also brotherly countries," he concluded.
