Starting July 1, 2025, Peruvian citizens will be allowed to travel to Japan without a visa for stays of up to 90 consecutive days, the Japanese Embassy in Lima announced on Monday, following a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tokyo.

This important announcement was first made in November 2024 during a meeting between Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and President Dina Boluarte on the sidelines of the APEC Peru forum in Lima.

The date of its entry into force was confirmed today.

The visa exemption will apply to Peruvian citizens holding a valid ordinary passport that meets the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) for passports with integrated circuits.

"As of July 1, 2025, the Government of Japan will lift the measure recommending that Peruvian citizens obtain a visa in advance, provided that they hold valid Peruvian electronic ordinary passports compliant with ICAO regulations and are traveling for the purpose of a ‘short-term stay’ not exceeding 90 consecutive days," reads the statement from the Japanese Embassy in Lima.

This measure is expected to further strengthen the bonds of friendship with Peru —a country with which Japan has maintained diplomatic relations for over 150 years— by promoting greater people-to-people exchange between both nations, the diplomatic mission added.

The decision to eliminate the visa requirement will save time by removing the procedures required to obtain authorization, including submitting the travel itinerary —whether by ship or aircraft— with exact entry and exit dates for Japan; the activity schedule, which includes accommodation and contact details; tax and bank documents from the National Superintendence of Customs and Tax Administration (SUNAT) to prove financial solvency; passport, national ID card, and other documents.
