passed away at the age of 89 in the capital, Lima, on Sunday.
The acclaimed man of letters passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loved ones, his son Alvaro Vargas Llosa reported via social media.
Likewise, the son shared a letter signed by himself and his siblings, Morgana and Gonzalo, stating that no public ceremony will be held to bid him farewell, in accordance with the wishes of the renowned writer born in Arequipa, southern Peru.
"It is with deep sorrow that we announce that our father, Mario Vargas Llosa, passed away peacefully in Lima today, surrounded by his family," the statement began.
"His departure will sadden his relatives, his friends, and his readers around the world, but we hope that they will find comfort, as we do, in the fact that he enjoyed a long, adventurous and fruitful life, and leaves behind him a body of work that will outlive him," the letter added.
The grown-up children also stated that their mother, Patricia Llosa, and the writer's grandchildren trust they will have the space and privacy to bid him farewell as a family and in the company of close friends.
"As was his will, his remains will be cremated," the Vargas Llosa siblings specified.
"We will proceed in the coming hours and days in accordance with his instructions. No public ceremony will take place," the document added.
The statement was also shared by his daughter Morgana, who reiterated the deep sorrow caused in her family by the passing of the author of works such as "Conversation in the Cathedral" and "The City and the Dogs."
Mario Vargas Llosa celebrated his 89th birthday on March 28 in the city of Lima, where he had been residing in recent years.
"How many lives in one. Happy birthday, Varguitas!" Alvaro Vargas Llosa posted on his X account, alongside two photographs of the Peruvian Nobel laureate.
