Peru's Andina News Agency participates in 6th World Media Summit

The Peruvian Andina News Agency participated in the 6th World Media Summit held in China.

The event —organized by the Xinhua News Agency and attended by executives of the world's media outlets— was attended by Andina Agency News Media Director, Felix Paz Quiroz, and Editora Peru Board Chairman Hugo Aguirre Castañeda.

Paz participated as a speaker at this global meeting held in the Chinese city of Urumqi. He stated that at this time reality shows us that media outlets, in a prompt manner and conditioned by technology, have entered an "Era of Intelligent Communication" due to the use of generative artificial intelligence (AI).

This "era," for example, brings with it the increasingly rapid dissemination of content, primarily due to technological advances and the impact of social media, he pointed out.

In this context -he said- the great challenge for the media is to use technology and apply the basic principles of journalism in the dissemination of information, and thus confront a harmful and growing ecosystem of disinformation.

He pointed out that, particularly at Andina News Agency, we are undergoing a process of digital transformation which is expected to be strengthened in the coming months with a new CMS, an editorial production and content management system, and the greater use of new technologies, perhaps in alliance or sharing experiences with some media outlets around the world.

Paz also highlighted that Andina News Agency established an institutional alliance with the Medialab of the Faculty of Letters at the National University of San Marcos in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

From there emerged the Peruvian AI avatar Illariy, developed by MediaLab, which generates content in Quechua, Aymara, Awajun, and other native Peruvian languages. It became our news presenter.

Paz indicated that every week, on Andina's digital platforms, as well as on those of the Official Gazette El Peruano, a newscast called "Illarywan Yachari" (Catch up with Illariy) is broadcast, where the most important news from Andina Agency is disseminated, presented in Quechua language by the aforementioned avatar.

He said that the Illariy project uses advanced AI technology to rescue the legacy of our ancestors, in addition to revitalizing and preserving indigenous languages.

Thus, Illariy has become a symbol of the use of an emerging technology which, paradoxically, is not yet fully used in the dissemination of indigenous languages, he added.

"At Andina, we believe in the need to defend this space to make visible the voices of those who have historically not been prioritized, and we assume the responsibility for continuing to work to change that narrative. We have proposed to sustain a strategy of cultural inclusion using artificial intelligence in light of the richness of our diversity," he underlined.

This case shows that we can make positive use of technology to generate high-quality content, reaching out to more people, and preserving the main foundation of the media: to inform and educate, he underscored.
