Peru: FA Minister to travel to U.S. to attend OAS Secretary General election

11:57 | Lima, Mar. 7.

Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer will travel to the United States to participate in the Fifty-Sixth Special Session of the General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS), convened to elect its new Secretary General.

The election will take place in Washington, D.C., on March 10, 2025, in accordance with Supreme Resolution No. 043-2025-PCM published in the Official Gazette El Peruano on Friday.

It authorizes the Foreign Affairs Minister's trip from March 9 to 11 for this purpose.

The government official's attendance at the session will reaffirm Peru’s commitment to the Inter-American System, democracy, and regional cooperation —fundamental pillars of the OAS— as well as ensure the country's active participation in the decisions of this hemispheric organization, reinforcing its leadership in the region, the resolution stated.

During Ambassador Schialer's absence, the Foreign Affairs Ministry's Office will be entrusted to Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon.
