President Dina Boluarte on Thursday issued a call for action to ensure a future free of plastic pollution, emphasizing that Peru is making significant progress in this regard.

Mrs. Boluarte made these statements during her participation in the Stakeholder Dialogue titled "New Agreement on Plastics: What Will It Take?" as part of the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting taking place in Davos, Switzerland.

"I call for action: we need to join forces and work together across all sectors to ensure a future free of plastic pollution, where our children can grow up in a clean and healthy environment," she expressed at this event.

The top official also noted that Peru has made significant strides in addressing the issue of pollution, such as the ban on single-use plastics and regulations on the handling of various chemical substances.

Similarly, the Head of State underscored that Peru has led significant international efforts to combat plastic pollution.

She mentioned that our country, alongside Rwanda, presented a resolution aimed at creating a legally binding international instrument on this matter during the fifth United Nations Environment Assembly.

“This crucial step started the negotiations to create the global treaty, establishing the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), responsible for drafting the instrument, including its application in marine environments," she indicated.

The President stated that, at the fifth INC session held at the end of 2024 in Busan (South Korea), Peru and over a hundred countries maintained a strong commitment to reaching a legally-binding agreement, with implementation and monitoring mechanisms covering plastics’ entire life cycle.

The top official mentioned that, on that occasion, no consensus was reached, as the document did not meet the expectations of all participants. Thus, Mrs. Boluarte called for efforts toward achieving this goal.

"The success of this treaty does not lie solely in the agreements signed, but in our collective will to turn them into reality," she said.

Agenda of Activities

This high-level session featured European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as well. It aimed to reflect on the goals of tripling renewable energy and doubling efficiency by 2030.

Additionally, it served as a platform for the launch of a new Global Forum on Energy Transition, an initiative by the European Union.

While in Davos, she is joined by Ministers Elmer Schialer (Foreign Affairs) and Jose Arista (Economy-Finance).
