Peruvian handicrafts captivate the world with new brand

00:00 | Lima, Feb. 11.

One of the key advantages of Peruvian handicrafts is the ability to generate income for a significant number of families in non-urban areas.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur), handicraft exports reached $40 million in 2024, a result of ongoing efforts to consolidate market positions and expand into new destinations, as reported by the Official Gazette El Peruano.

"This progress was also driven by sectoral promotion policies focused on commercial aspects. Since 2024, as Mincetur, we have been implementing strategies and establishing lines of action with both private and public organizations to give visibility to the country’s entire productive base," Handicrafts Director at Mincetur, Rusbel Hernandez, stated.

The official explained that the sector's challenges are mainly focused on closing gaps in areas such as language, fulfillment of shipments, and formalization.

However, he acknowledged progress in these areas thanks to the efforts of both public and private institutions.

Top Markets

As in previous years, the United States remained the primary export market in 2024, accounting for nearly 30% of total Peruvian shipments.

"In this case, exports of alpaca fiber garments, ceramics, and other crafts stood out. Textile fibers are highly valued, and Peruvian ceramics are particularly appreciated for decorative purposes," Hernandez stated.

However, he believes that the same interest is observed in Canada and European countries.

Boosting Sales

Beyond securing better prices through intermediaries, Mincetur aims for artisan production workshops to start reaching the market.

"Therefore, it is necessary for them to make an effort to understand market trends and the behavior of certain segments in order to establish a work plan," Hernandez explained.

Commercial intelligence studies conducted by Mincetur, along with support for participation in international trade fairs, are essential in this effort.

Key Goals

An important goal for this year is to achieve the positioning of the 'Artesanías del Perú' brand.

"First, this would take place at the national level to create an identity in terms of the consumption of handcrafted items, but ones that are rigorously presented, with appropriate packaging that enhances the customer experience and are positioned as high-end products," he asserted.

With this refined brand identity, Peru's handicrafts would begin to be introduced to the world with a potential exportable offering, meeting high standards that ensure a highly engaging experience for future buyers or travelers visiting our country.

In 2024, 34 commercial activities were promoted, and a slight increase is expected for this year.

Outlook for 2025

Handicraft exports are expected to grow by 1.2% in 2025 compared to the previous year.

"It may not seem like an ambitious goal, but given the current production capacity and the level of involvement of artisan workshops, reaching this target requires significant government effort," Hernandez stated.

This year, retail sales events will be promoted both in Peru and abroad —at least one internationally— alongside promotional activities to boost the visibility of the 'Artesanías del Perú' brand and raise public awareness about the consumption of these products.
