09:02 | Davos (Switzerland), Jan. 22.

At the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer expressed the disappointment of Amazonian countries over the lack of greater financial commitment from the international community, urging them to join Peru's initiative titled "Green and Resilient Amazon."

This plan expands the "Forest Program," which currently provides economic subsidies in the Amazonian zones of certain Peruvian regions, with the aim of conserving forests and reducing deforestation.

In his speech, the diplomat expressed the importance of providing funding for projects seeking to preserve the Amazon, given the environmental services it delivers to humanity.

Likewise, the ambassador referred to the provision of basic services aimed at meeting the needs of small communities residing in the Amazon rainforest.

Meeting with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Similarly, he reiterated the request that, through the OHCHR representative in Caracas, the status of detention and health conditions of the aforementioned compatriots be verified or, if necessary, to proceed with their search and location.

It is worth mentioning that the Peruvian petition, advocating for our fellow citizens, had previously been outlined in a letter from Minister Schialer delivered to United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights, Nada Al-Nashif.

Similarly, they discussed other issues regarding the human rights situation in Peru and congratulated each other on the work carried out by the Office of the High Commissioner in the South American country and the collaborative manner in which it is conducted.

Meeting with Saudi Arabian counterpart

Also in Davos, Foreign Affairs Minister Schialer held talks with his Saudi Arabian counterpart, Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir, during which the state of bilateral relations was underscored.

The Peruvian Cabinet member highlighted economic growth, low inflation, and our Government's stability, as well as opportunities in the mining sector and the interest in strengthening relations with the Persian Gulf region.

Lastly, both authorities agreed to highlight the great potential for Saudi investments in the mining-energy sectors, as well as in infrastructure, to be brought to Peru.
