Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, along with Cabinet Chief Gustavo Adrianzen and Justice-Human Rights Minister Eduardo Arana, announced before the Diplomatic Corps accredited in Peru the candidacy of Dr. Luz del Carmen Ibañez for the position of Judge at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for the 2027–2036 term.

The ICJ is also known as "the Hague Court."

Minister Schialer noted that Peru has not had a judge on this international body in over 50 years.

The diplomat recalled that the illustrious former President of the Republic, Jose Luis Bustamante y Rivero, served on this Court between 1961 and 1970, and presided over it from 1967 to 1969.

Similarly, the ambassador highlighted the qualities of Dr. Ibañez, who was elected as a judge at the International Criminal Court (ICC) in 2017 with the support of 77 states. She served as its Vice-President from 2021 to 2024.

"The election of Dr. Luz Ibañez Carranza would not only be a recognition of her impeccable career (…), but also a manifestation of our nation's firm commitment to international law, equity, and social peace," he stated.

The event was held at Torre Tagle Palace in the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Friday.
