Peru expressed its solidarity with the people and Government of the United States following an attack in the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, which resulted in 15 deaths and 35 injuries.

"We extend our condolences to the affected families and reiterate our firm rejection of all forms of violence," the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated via social media on Wednesday evening.

The death toll from the vehicular assault in New Orleans in the early hours of New Year's Day, considered a terrorist attack by authorities, rose from 10 to 15.

Authorities have identified 42-year-old U.S. citizen Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar as the perpetrator of said assault, which occurred shortly after 3:15 a.m. (local time). Jabbar died during the attack.

He had used a rented white Ford F-150 pickup truck for the mass attack on central Bourbon Street, the tourist heart of the city, which was closed to traffic during New Year's celebrations.
