on Monday projected that United States-Peruvian relations will be fruitful throughout
's second term, just as they were during the four years of his first administration.
"Let me extend my warmest congratulations to Donald Trump, President of the United States (…). This will be four years of fruitful relations with Peru, just as the first four years of his first administration were," he said in remarks to RPP Noticias.
Regarding Peruvians with irregular immigration status living in the U.S. and the announcements of deportations by the new administration, Schialer said that around 70-80% of fellow citizens residing in the North American country have legal status, according to
Foreign Affairs Ministry databases.
However, the diplomat said that they take this situation very seriously. He added that they will work jointly with the Peruvian consulates in the U.S., which provide legal advisory services for their compatriots.
"We will work very closely with the Government of the United States because Peru does not want to encourage irregular migration," Schialer stated.
Likewise, the ambassador said that consular services for Peruvians in the U.S. will be strengthened.
"Our consulates have legal advisory services (available) for our fellow citizens, and we are now going to strengthen them as they become necessary at various consulates," he explained.
To ensure more efficient service, he mentioned that Peru opened two additional consulates last year, taking this situation into account and considering the number of Peruvians living in the North American country.
"We opened two new consulates in the United States: we have a fairly extensive network of consulates that Peruvian residents can turn to," Minister Schialer concluded.
