Japan will cease to require visa for Peruvians

08:30 | Lima, Dec. 17.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Leaders' Meeting, held in Peru last November, resulted in important agreements focused on further strengthening the relationship among its 21 members, along with a series of promising announcements, including the upcoming elimination of visa requirement for Peruvians wishing to travel to Japan.

The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs was the entity responsible for issuing this important announcement, which has excited thousands of compatriots with planned trips to that Asian country or who dream of visiting the Land of the Rising Sun one day.

According to the World Economic Forum's Travel & Tourism Development Index, Japan has become the third best destination for travel and tourism in 2024.

This year, Peru and Japan celebrated the 151st anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations, and the official visit by Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba concluded the APEC 2024 forum agenda with the decision to eliminate the visa requirement, encouraging more Peruvians to travel to Japan.

The decision to eliminate the visa requirement will save time by removing the cumbersome procedures that need to be completed to obtain authorization, including the request for a travel itinerary —whether by sea or air— with precise entry and exit dates from Japan; the program of activities, including accommodation and contact details; National Superintendence of Tax Administration (Sunat) and banking documents to prove financial solvency, passport, national ID, and others.

Preferred Destinations in Japan

Mitsuyuki Tsumura, a member of the Board of Directors of the Peruvian-Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIPJ), stated that the upcoming visa exemption for Peruvians is part of the 2024-2033 Roadmap aimed at strengthening relations between the two countries, which date back 151 years.

The main destinations for Peruvians in Japan are Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Magome, Tsumago, Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Nagoya, Hiroshima, Hokkaido, and Hakone. Most travelers are family members or couples.

Trips last approximately two weeks and are most preferred during late March and April, late October and November, and in winter.

"Japan is ready to welcome more tourists," said Tsumura, general manager of Mickey Tour agency.
