Peru: President will be accompanied to Vatican by Foreign Affairs and Justice Ministers

01:00 | Lima, May. 16.

President Dina Boluarte will be accompanied by Ministers Elmer Schialer (Foreign Affairs) and Juan Alcantara (Justice and Human Rights) as part of the official delegation to Vatican City to attend Pope Leo XIV's enthronement ceremony.

This announcement was made by Minister Schialer on Thursday evening during the press conference following the first session of the Council of Ministers led by Eduardo Arana.

"The President, who as Head of State leads the delegation, will be accompanied by myself, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Justice and Human Rights, as well as diplomatic officials accredited to the Vatican and the Italian State," he stated.

In that regard, the Cabinet member explained that three official members will depart from Lima and will be joined in Rome (Italy) by five diplomats, a press aide from the Government Palace, and the Secretary General.

"The Secretary General is traveling because the President of the Republic must carry out what is known as remote governing. She continues to lead the Government of Peru, and the concrete expression of that is remote governing. That is why the Secretary General of the Government Palace is traveling, along with security personnel. So, we are keeping things as discreet as possible," he said.

Minister Schialer also recalled that once the election of Pope Leo XIV was announced —a U.S. citizen by birth but naturalized Peruvian— it was initially considered to form a State delegation along with the heads of the Judiciary and Congress.

"I coordinated with the leaders of the two branches of government, the Judicial and Legislative (Branches), who expressed their gratitude for this invitation and initially showed a desire to adjust their schedules, (...) but then, as happens to all of us, a series of obligations arose that could not be rescheduled by either authority, despite their initial interest in attending," he indicated.

Moreover, the diplomat explained that the Justice and Human Rights minister is accompanying this delegation because this ministry is responsible for matters related to churches in the country, particularly the Catholic ones.
