Peru will promote the development of sustainable urban transport. To this end, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) signed a €40 million loan agreement today with the German Financial Cooperation through the KfW Development Bank.

These funds are going to finance the "Program to Support Appropriate National Actions for Sustainable Urban Transport Mitigation in Peru IV (NAMA TRANSPerú)."

This loan will allow for the implementation of structural changes to promote the transformation of Peru's urban transport sector to a sustainable and low-carbon sector, taking into account the NAMA TRANSPerú Program, whose objective is to provide high-quality public transport for all citizens, contributing to the Peruvian State's commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), represented by the Minister of Economy and Finance, José Salardi Rodríguez, and by KfW, represented by Simon Erhard, director of the KfW Agency for Peru signed the loan agreement.

The German Ambassador to Peru, Sabine Bloch, attended the signing event.

Minister José Salardi highlighted the support of German Cooperation and the good relationship between the two countries.

"These actions strengthen the socio-strategic relationship between Peru and Germany, which dates back more than 60 years. We have common interests, such as sustainable urban development, which is one of the main focuses of both governments," said the head of the MEF.

He emphasized that this approach has allowed for the financing of projects and programs in sectors that, in turn, promote the creation of sustainable urban environments, such as housing, transportation, solid waste, water, and sanitation.

Meanwhile, German Ambassador Sabine Bloch emphasized that the NAMA program reaffirms the importance of programmatic loans, allowing for the continuity of public policies regardless of changes in government or officials.

“The continuity of public policies is essential for the success of public management and achieving continuous improvement for citizens. Promoting a sustainable urban transportation system is one of the pillars of German cooperation,” she stated.

In turn, KfW's director for Peru, Simon Erhard, emphasized that the programmatic loan completes a process of supporting several reforms in the public transport sector that have contributed to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and environmental protection, while also leading to a substantial improvement in the daily lives and health of the population.

Since 2015, the Government of Peru has been developing actions to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from urban transport in an institutionalized and coordinated manner across sectors through the implementation of the TRANSPerú NAMA Program, with the technical and financial assistance of the German Cooperation.
