The Historic Sanctuary “Pampa de Ayacucho” located at 516 kilometers to the east of Lima, and at just one hour airplane flight, is becoming a major tourist destination in the Ayacucho region.
During the last long holiday becaause of the Holy Week, this historic sanctuary attracted 24,074 visitors, which represented an 18.70% increase compared to the same period of the previous year.
This increase in tourist flow reflects a clear trend among national travelers toward destinations that combine history, nature, and conservation.
The Historic Sanctuary, is famous for having been the scene of the decisive Battle of Ayacucho that sealed South America's independence from the Spanish Empire in the XIX Century, and now has become an important tourist attraction that not only offers a unique cultural experience but also direct contact with landscapes of great ecological value.

Other tourist attractions that recorded a significant influx of visitors were the Ruqruqa waterfalls, located in the community of Quispillaccta (district of Chuschi, province of Cangallo) that attracted 2,432 visits; and the Turquoise Waters of Millpu, in the community of Circamarca (district of Huancaraylla, province of Fajardo) which received 475 people during the last long holiday.
Among the most visited places during this 2025 Holy Week, was the Wari archaeological complex, the historic city of Vilcas Huamán, and the Pikimachay cave, all noted for their heritage and natural value.
This tourism rebound represents not only a milestone for domestic tourism in Ayacucho, but also a vital boost for the local economy.
The communities near the Sanctuary play a key role in the sustainable tourism value chain, offering guiding services, gastronomy, crafts, and lodging.

Sinthia Caballero, head of the Regional Directorate of Foreign Trade and Tourism of Ayacucho (Dircetur), commented that the initial projection for the number of visitors was 20,000, but that they surpassed 30,000 during the holiday period that started on April 10 and ended on the 20th of the same month, during which several sectors benefited.
