More than 1.2 million Peruvians received free legal assistance during 2024

More than 1.2 million people in vulnerable situations throughout Peru received free legal attention from the Public Defense of the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (MINJUSDH) during 2024.

This figure represents a growth of more than 135 thousand beneficiaries compared to what was reported in 2023.

From January to December, one million 292,019 services were registered, of which 895 thousand 150 were consultations and 396 thousand 869 sponsorships, in the specialties of criminal defense, legal assistance and defense of victims, extrajudicial conciliation and the services of the professionals of the multidisciplinary team, in the 34 district offices nationwide.

The Minister of Justice and Human Rights, Eduardo Arana Ysa, highlighted the quality of the services provided during 2024 and highlighted the commitment of public defenders to low-income and vulnerable users.

He also pointed out that the services with the highest demand are related to the matters of food, custody, visitation regime, psychological aggression, family and sexual violence, among others.







This year, the Public Defense also managed to obtain 93 million 789,195 soles for its users in the concept of civil reparations and alimony in the judicial processes undertaken during this year, representing an increase of 36% compared to 2023, that is, more than 25 million soles more than last year.

From January to October, the Free Legal Assistance Centers - ALEGRA and Mega ALEGRA provided services to 191 thousand 646 people with limited economic resources throughout the country, registering 148 thousand 552 consultations and 43 thousand 94 sponsorships.

During the same period and as part of the vision of this Government with a new public policy to solve the problems of citizens and bring State services closer to the most vulnerable in the country, the ALEGRA and Mega ALEGRA centers with an intercultural focus, totaled 25 thousand 36 services in the district offices of Ucayali, Cusco, Apurímac and Selva Central, providing efficient and timely service to users in Shipibo Konibo, Quechua and Asháninka.

It should be remembered that service in the 34 district offices of the Public Defense is from Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 16:30 hours. Likewise and at the same time, users can call FONO ALEGRA 1884 to request the free legal advice service.
