Peru opposes foreign intervention in Venezuela, supports peaceful transition

10:30 | Lima, Jan. 31.

The Peruvian Government "openly opposes any foreign intervention" in Venezuela and will contribute to international pressure against Nicolas Maduro's regime in order to foster a peaceful transition in favor of Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, whom it recognizes as President-elect, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer stated.

During an interview with Canal N, the Peruvian government official said that Gonzalez Urrutia is the President-elect of Venezuela, legitimately elected in the elections last July.

Schialer added that Peru's Executive Branch does not recognize Maduro's government because it is an autocracy.

However, the diplomat noted that Peru opposes "any foreign intervention" or "invasion" of Venezuelan territory.

The ambassador also stated that the outcome of Gonzalez Urrutia's visit to Lima on Wednesday and Thursday was positive.

"Lima is where the most Venezuelans live outside the country," the foreign opposition leader told Peru's President Dina Boluarte during his visit, Schialer indicated.

The Peruvian Cabinet member emphasized that "the Venezuelan problem is for all" Latin Americans and emphasized that they will continue working in favor of democracy in that country.

Asked about a possible time frame for a transition of power in Venezuela, the minister said this "will depend on the quality and quantity of international pressure exerted and how it is received in Venezuela."

Schialer added that it will depend on "how long and to what extent it will be sustainable" for Venezuelans themselves within their own territory.

"What we will continue to do is help build international pressure against the Caracas regime and in favor of Gonzalez Urrutia, so that there can be a peaceful transition," he expressed.
