The
lamented that some Head of State in the region prefer to disregard that ex-President Pedro Castillo carried out a coup d'état on December 7, 2022, for which he is facing legal proceedings.
The government agency stated that the legal proceedings against the ex-Head of State for the alleged crime of rebellion fully guarantee due process and are unrelated to his ideology or social status.
"This attempt by Pedro Castillo to assume absolute control of the State is being tried by an autonomous and independent judiciary, with all due process guarantees, and is unrelated to his social status or ideological views," reads the communiqué issued on Wednesday.
Also being tried alongside him are former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez and her predecessor, Anibal Torres.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro questioned the judicial proceedings through his X account.
He deemed it "an insult to democracy and the American Convention on Human Rights," saying that Castillo is being facing trial for being "poor and left-wing."
