Peru: Council of Ministers declares another 90 districts affected by rains in emergency

09:02 | Lima, Mar. 6.

The Council of Ministers approved a new supreme decree to declare a state of emergency in 90 districts affected by heavy rains in Amazonas, Ancash, Apurimac, Arequipa, Ayacucho, Cusco, Huancavelica, Huanuco, Ica, Junin, La Libertad, Lima, Moquegua, Pasco, Tacna, Piura, Tumbes, and Ucayali regions.

This was announced by Prime Minister Gustavo Adrianzen at a press conference following the weekly Council of Ministers session on Wednesday.

The Cabinet chief explained that this is the fourth supreme decree issued by the Executive Branch to declare a state of emergency in various Peruvian zones affected by heavy rainfall.

"There are a total of 90 districts that have been added to those already covered by decrees No. 024, 021, and 07," Adrianzen stated.

The Prime Minister also reported that the first decree issued due to heavy rains has already completed its 60-day duration.

It was considered appropriate not to extend it but to approve a new one, as conditions have changed significantly from January to date.

"This has allowed us to consider approving a new supreme decree, taking into account additional districts that are now in a state of emergency. Let us remember that the rains initially affected the south and have now moved toward the north," he explained.

On the other hand, the high-ranking official stated that the Council of Ministers approved the extension of the state of emergency in Jose Leonardo Ortiz and La Victoria districts, in Chiclayo, northern Peru, due to issues with the sewer system.

Additionally, he reported that it was agreed to extend the state of emergency in the Trujillo, Pataz, and Viru provinces, La Libertad region, due to issues related to crime and citizen insecurity.
