The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Wednesday described the current state of the bilateral relationship between Peru and Viet Nam as being at a high level, and noted that efforts are being made to identify new areas of common interest to further strengthen it.

The Peruvian Head of State made these remarks during a meeting with the President of the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam, Luong Cuong, at the Government Palace in Lima.

There, Mrs. Boluarte noted that the bilateral relationship is currently centered on trade and investment.

"We work to identify new areas of connection, given our extensive natural resources and cultural heritage," the Peruvian Head of State said.

In this context, she reminded attendees that both countries "share common interests in addressing challenges such as poverty reduction, climate change, ocean and water resource protection, food security, and the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development."

Similarly, the top official welcomed the ongoing activity of two bilateral coordination mechanisms, as this implies maintaining a permanent political and technical dialogue.

In that regard, she specified that the Peru-Viet Nam Bilateral Consultations Mechanism, composed of the Deputy Ministers of Foreign Affairs from both countries, met on October 3.

Mrs. Boluarte further highlighted that a meeting of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Affairs and Technical Cooperation is scheduled for the first quarter of 2025.

In turn, the President of Viet Nam stated that this meeting "will take the bilateral relationship to a new level."

Luong Cuong highlighted that Peru is Viet Nam's sixth-largest trading partner and its top investment partner in Latin America.

In addition to congratulating Peru on organizing the APEC 2024 meetings, the Vietnamese President expressed his hopes "for a more sustainable and lasting bilateral relationship."

Both dignitaries also signed a joint declaration on strengthening bilateral relations based on what was expressed and agreed upon at today’s meeting.

Later, the Vietnamese President was decorated by his Peruvian counterpart with the Grand Collar of the Order of the Sun of Peru, in appreciation and in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral relations, to be held on November 14.

Peru is hosting APEC for the third time after the 2008 and 2016 editions.
