Peru: Former Minister and ex-Congresswoman Gloria Montenegro Figueroa passes away

Former Minister of Women-Vulnerable Populations and ex-parliamentarian Gloria Montenegro Figueroa passed away at the age of 69 on Wednesday, the Congress of the Republic confirmed, which also expressed its condolences to her family.

Montenegro was mayor of Trujillo and congresswoman for La Libertad region between 2016–2021, both by election representing Alianza para el Progreso (APP) party.

As part of her parliamentary work, she was chairwoman of the Commission on Social Inclusion, vice-chair of the Commission on Decentralization, and a member of the Permanent Commission.

She was appointed Minister of Women and Vulnerable Populations in March 2019, during the government of then-President Martin Vizcarra.

After leaving APP, she joined the Partido Morado and later the party Lo Justo, along with former Congresswoman Marisol Perez Tello and congresswoman Flor Pablo. However, the party did not achieve registration.

Gloria Montenegro was a certified public accountant, held a master’s degree in Administration, and a PhD in Education. She also held a specialization in public policy and conflict prevention.

Likewise, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations expressed its condolences on her passing through its official account on X.


Once her death was confirmed, former Minister of Women Ana Jara expressed her sorrow over the loss and extended her condolences to her friends and family.
