The
commemorates today, May 21, the 146th anniversary of the Naval Battle of Iquique and the heroic feat of Grand Admiral Miguel Grau, the "Gentleman of the Seas."
Via social media, the government agency recalled that during the battle, Miguel Grau commanded the monitor (warship) Huascar, where he fought with courage, honor, and profound humanity.
The Naval Battle of Iquique, which took place on May 21, 1879, was a major naval engagement during the War of the Pacific between Chile and the Peru-Bolivia alliance.
The monitor Huascar, under the command of Captain Miguel Grau, rammed and sank the Chilean corvette Esmeralda, successfully lifting the blockade of the Iquique Port.
Today marks 146 years since the Battle of Iquique was fought, resulting in a tactical victory for Peru.
